With an expanding enrollment at Webber Academy, classroom space for music, drama and art is becoming more limited. The current drama program is carried out in the unfinished third floor of the high school. Additional classroom space is needed for the teaching of core subjects and will be built on the third floor of the high school where drama is now located. The concert shows are held in the gymnasiums where lighting and acoustic needs are lacking.
The development of this project would respond to the artistic and theatrical needs of Calgary and area residents that are not being met by existing facilities. The report "The Current State of Cultural Spaces for Arts in Calgary" and the Calgary Arts Development document "Reclaiming Calgary's Cultural Identity: Art spaces Strategy and Capital Plan" show the significant need for art spaces. In particular, the Webber Academy project targets the objective of Calgary Arts Development which is to "Develop Arts Facilities as a Core Part of Complete Communities". It is stated that "Calgary ranks rather poorly relative to other Canadian and U.S. cities on the quantity and quality of our arts spaces" and "Large areas of Calgary have no dedicated arts facilities, limiting accessibility to the arts

After meetings with Webber Academy staff and numerous Calgary fine arts representatives, the concept of the theatre complex was brought to life with top industry professionals engaged in the project. Preliminary plans were drawn up after a number of meetings with the architect and visits to a number of theatres in Western Canada. Based upon a start date of July, 2010 the project is expected to be complete by mid April, 2012.
